Healthy Travel Snacks + Tips

Our family LOVES to travel….

But you know what the hardest part of road tripping, airports and flights (besides doing the potty dance when there’s a super long line or nowhere to stop) is?

When you are beyond hungry and you realize that you’ve forgotten to bring something for everyone to eat…

And you’re on the road, which also means practically NO healthy options! If you’ve got food intolerances or allergies there are even fewer choices.

Cue the HANGRY monster appearing!

One of the best ways to keep this monster at bay is to plan ahead and create a healthy travel food kit (one that fits your food restrictions, if you have any) filled with yummy travel snacks. Something you can take with you in the car (even if it’s a long or short ride), on the plane, train etc… You can pack it up and have with you anywhere.

Find yourself a nice sized container or lunch bag. I use plastic containers I have in my pantry and a big Yeti cooler bag.  It really doesn’t matter what it is – just something that can hold your goodies.

It’s best to pack it with high protein/healthy fats that keep you full and keep your blood sugar from dipping.

QUICK SNACKS

The sky is really the limit on the different healthy snack options you can keep in your travel food kit. Here are some of my personal favorites:

Bars

Lara Bars

Rx Bars

Nut Butter Packs

Artisana

Justin’s

Lean Protein & Healthy Fats

Wild Planet Tuna:

tasty good with rice crackers, cucumbers or veggies that are easily packable

Epic Bars:

Bison, turkey, chicken and even fish bars packed full of protein and healthy fats.

Hummus or Guacamole

Snack packs for our plant friendly friends or just a plain avocado travels well too.

Trail Mix

Almonds/Pecans/Seeds + Cacao Nibs = HEAVEN

Make your own or buy a pre-made mix, but buyer beware of the sugar content.

Water

Always make sure to have a container for your water. It’s free, so no need to buy bottled water! Pack your own glass bottle – I like the big liter ones from Crate & Barrel and I keep it dry and in my car or get a Klean Kanteen or glass bottle from Lifefactory to travel with.  It’s glass but has a protective cover on it.

I like to put a piece of Turmeric – yes Turmeric in the bottle. Just a slice to help fight off the nasty bacteria and other stuff you get exposed to on airplanes. It helps keep your immune system up to snuff!

Utensils

You can’t forget about these! Although most of these options are finger foods, there are some great reusable silverware sets you can keep in your travel food kit. The one I love is:

To Go Silverware: They’re put together in a little package with a spoon, knife and fork, plus they’re reusable, sustainable (oh so good for the environment)  and dishwasher-safe.

The bottom line is, a little planning ahead is going to save you from dealing with a hangry monster while you’re traveling!
